With a peak three miles above sea level, Mount Nex's summit has never been reached by a single climber. Various aircraft have taken pictures of it, however, revealing a harsh and unforgiving crag with little to no vegetation and an extremely steep, almost needle-like peak. There are no trails, no roads, and no paths to take on this mountain; it is rugged wilderness from base to top, and it does not permit trespassers lightly.
It must be repeated that Mount Nex is steep. Scaling it is equivalent to scaling a vertical wall. Anyone insane enough to try climbing it will need modern rock-climbing gear, including ropes and harnesses; hiking will not be enough to conquer this geological beast.
The weather around Mount Nex is perpetually violent. Winds in excess of 130 MPH rake the mountainside at higher altitudes, adding their wind chill to increasingly lower temperatures. During the summer, sunlight scorches the rock face and slowly bakes anything sitting on it. Spring, autumn, and winter rains deluge the mountain with regularity, and blizzards are not uncommon on its northern side.
Mount Nex rests directly south of Swamp Bay. There is an abundance of plants and animals in the foothills on the side of the mountain facing the bay, but Mount Nex itself is solid rock. Plants cannot survive on it, and without plants there are no fauna, so the mountain is barren and lifeless on the outside. In short, foraging is not an option once one reaches Nex proper – climbers will need to bring their own supplies.
Mount Nex houses an extensive cave system at its base. The Ancients, who later resided on a floating island in the heavens, once lived in these caves. They were carved out into square shapes and repurposed to meet the Ancients' needs. A maze of passageways and tunnels connects the caves together, riddled with traps left by the Ancients to ward intruders away from their former home.
To the south of Mount Nex, the ruins of a metropolis waste away under the desert climate of the Wilds. A single wide road paved with stone was once the main artery of this city, but now exists only in a broken and crumbled state. It leads directly to the cave entrance at the base of Mount Nex.
History:
This mountain once went by another name, but it has long been lost to antiquity and few remember it now. It now goes by the name of Death, for that is what it represents to any fool who dares climb it.
Nex was created, fully-formed, when This World was produced by the Hands. Yet it shows signs of natural geological development, slowly forming over millions of years due to the shifting of tectonic plates.
Mount Nex is so tall that it reaches the elevation at which storms pass over the area. The winds off the coast of Swamp Bay frequently try to sweep such storms past Mount Nex into the Wilds, but Nex is tall enough to block their path, catching storm clouds against its side and keeping them there while they pour their rain over its northern foothills. As a result, one side of Mount Nex is lush with vegetation while the other side is barren and rocky due to a lack of rain.
The constant deluges on one side of Mount Nex carved out a natural cave system in its base over time. The Ancients used these caves as their home base for a while, but eventually chose the freedom of the skies over the security of the earth. Their former home now sits abandoned.
The caves weren't their only home, though. The Wilds show signs of having been fully populated at some point, and ruins built by the Ancients can be found all over the desert, suggesting the former presence of a vast metropolis. The most significant remaining artifact from that time is a wide road that cuts through the heart of the Wilds, leading directly to the ruins at the base of the mountain. Locals have dubbed this road “Nex Parvulus”, meaning “child of Nex” in the Ancients' tongue. (The cave system it leads to has also been named; “Nexus”, which is short for “Nex Uterus”, the Womb of Death.)
The coastline behind Mount Nex is jagged and unnatural. Some speculate that this is where the now-floating Island of the Ancients resided while it was still attached to land. Others believe the coast to be the site of some major catastrophe which prompted the Ancients' sudden departure for the skies. Still others suggest that both theories are true, and that the Island of the Ancients only floats due to an accident of some kind.
Today, Mount Nex's menacing image has been dulled slightly by the advances of technology. Adventurous and/or foolish archeologists and mountain climbers from the nearby Smash City travel to the crag with the changing of the seasons, each one hoping to be the famous person who summits the mountain or unearths a hidden marvel of the Ancients within its depths. So far, none have succeeded.
Recently the Subspace Army took up residence within Nex's foothills and caves, but were unable to occupy its sides – not even the greatest minions of Tabuu could brave the mountain's ferocity and live. To this day, Nex's steep outside surface remains one of the few spots on the continent where no monsters live.
Rumors abound that the legendary Pokémon Rayquaza has taken residence up on the mountain's peak, but no evidence has surfaced to support such speculation.
Events:
Battling on Nex's outside surface is forbidden within the rules of the Smash Bros. Tournament, simply because the environment is too exceedingly hostile to permit it; cameramen cannot film what they can't see (and referees can't judge what they can't see), and visibility becomes very low during the mountain's frequent storms.
The Nexus is a different story. There are many moving platforms throughout the Ruins, most located above bottomless pits. Elevators are the primary means of transport between floors. Flamethrowers and lava traps aren't uncommon, and most of them are set to cyclical timers that activate every few seconds. Collapsing floors are also frequent and react to the weight of a person stepping on them.
Outside on the Path to the Ruins, there are no stage hazards to speak of beyond the usual desert heat of the Wilds. However, Nex Parvulus hosts some rare greenery due to irrigation systems built ages ago by the Ancients, and a few shade trees can be found along the road to provide relief from the heat.
Anything Else:
There is a perpetual ring of clouds up near Nex's peak, accumulated from many seasons of the mountain blocking clouds that try to pass over it. This ring is formed from clouds of the Sirrus variety and holds no water, making it good for little else besides decoration.
