Name:
Samantha Bee
Game of Origin:
None, original character (but loosely based off of a character from The Daily Show)
Nintendo Appearance:
None, original character
Nicknames:
Sam
Age:
32
Species:
Human
Gender:
Female
Alignment:
Truth
Type:
Noncombatant
Residence:
Smash City
Personal Relationships: (optional)
None
Occupation:
Reporter, TV News Anchor, occasional Color Commentator (they invite her to commentate on Brawl matches from time to time)
Weaknesses:
--Weak against Violence: seriously, she can't fight at all
--Tunnel-Vision: doesn't stop in her pursuit of the truth and ignores everything else when she's close to a big break
--Naturally Suspicious: tends to think people are lying/covering up when they aren't
--Overzealous: may resort to underhanded tactics in her quest for the truth
--Brutally Honest: refuses to speak lies herself, even when it's inconvenient for her (sarcasm and hyperbole are still okay when done in jest or parody)
Personality:
Samantha is very, very passionate about her job and her beliefs. She considers herself a “Truth Huntress”; constantly in pursuit of the hard reality that everyone seeks to cover up with fibs and tall tales. Her ultimate goal is to force people to look at the truth of the world and accept it rather than ignoring it and retreating into their comfort zones. She believes that making people face reality is the only way to motivate those people to help solve the world's problems.
Samantha is totally devoted to the belief that knowledge is power, and with this power one can change the world for the better. She has expressed a desire to become a schoolteacher in the past, but gave up on the idea after realizing just how big of a mess the world was in and how much help it presently needed to recover. “When people stop shoving their heads in the sand, I might consider it,” she said once in an interview.
Some people might think Samantha is overreacting to the world's problems, considering them far more threatening than they really are; after all, Master Hand could fix This World's problems of pollution, overpopulation, war, famine, disease, and natural disasters with a snap of his fingers, couldn't he? But Samantha also subscribes to a belief in human ingenuity and self-reliance; we humans shouldn't need the help of an omniscient demi-god when we have the ability to fix our problems ourselves, she thinks. Looking to the heavens for guidance when we could heal the world's wounds on our own -- or worse, pretending the wounds do not exist in the first place -- is sheer laziness according to her, and species do not survive nor thrive by being lazy. Samantha believes that This World's citizens deserve better, can achieve better, and should do so to prove their worth as something more than failures of evolution.
Samantha is all about the facts. She doesn't beat around the bush when it comes to reporting, unless doing so gets her closer to the truth. On occasion she will try tactics some may consider impolite or egregious, but the ends always justify the means in Samantha's eyes. The only tactic she will never tolerate is lying, because what's the point of making the world more honest if you lie in the process?
Likes:
--TRUTH (yes, the capitalization is required)
--The color pink
--Hair spray
--The number seven
--Coffee
--A good bagel (preferably with cream cheese and strawberries)
--Newspapers, TV, and radio
--Her car (it's old and battered but has sentimental value)
--Fridays
--Her editor (he's as zealous about truth as she is)
--Spring
--Snicker-Snax (a brand of candy made from long, thin, crunchy pretzel sticks dipped in chocolate)
Dislikes:
--Lies, fibs, deflection, passing the buck, distraction, etc.; basically, any tactic used to avoid telling the truth
--Being tricked (especially if it causes her to lie unintentionally)
--Gigantic mega-corporations (which usually flex their power to try to shut her up; yes, her news organization is funded by such a corporation, and she's not happy about that either, but it's the only way to fight fire with fire)
--Bad hair days
--Shedded fur in her morning coffee (she owns a cat and two dogs)
--Being in seclusion (she likes to keep herself updated on current events around the world)
--Rush hour traffic
--Mondays
--Tabloids (shamelessly lying and fabricating stories in a cheap bid to gain readers? Disgusting!)
--Winter (except Christmas, that holiday is awesome)
Appearance:
Samantha dresses gaudily. This is actually one of her tactics; it is much harder to ignore a reporter demanding your attention when said reporter is wearing neon pink clothes. People also tend to underestimate such reporters, which lets her get a big break sometimes by catching a person off-guard.
However, Sam is a professional. Despite the coloration which may indicate otherwise, her primary attire is a power woman business suit which she had custom-made for her. (No reputable clothing manufacturer would make a suit of such color unless specifically asked.) Her hair is done up in a poofy manner that flares out at the sides, and is also dyed bright pink. She wears 1-inch heels and a bra, but shuns pantyhose for reasons only known to her.
Samantha sometimes wears a pair of thick-rimmed eyeglasses with pink rhinestones on the corners. Her eyesight is normal, though; the glasses don't have lenses in them, they're empty frames. They get her even more attention when she wears them (those rhinestones reflect light pretty well and can blind cattle at a hundred paces), so she puts them on if she's “on the hunt”, as it were.
History:
Samantha is a native of This World and was created along with it around twelve years ago. Like most of the native This Worlders, she had no identity at first, similar to a newborn child. Lost and confused, she wandered about at first until stumbling upon Smash City Library.
Books were a crucial discovery in Samantha's life. Within them was unlimited information, and the opportunity to mold an identity for herself based on it. Samantha felt herself drawn to the library; it was located close to where her living quarters had been spawned when This World was created, so she visited it often and over time she read every book it contained. But she was left wanting; all the facts and knowledge she had accumulated didn't seem to be enough. She had an innate craving for knowledge, to better understand herself, the world around her, and the reason she had been created.
Several of the things described in the books interested her. For one year she went on a tour of the world, traveling to distant locations she'd previously seen in pictures or described with detailed paragraphs. She met many people, experienced many cultures, and learned a wealth of things the library had neglected to mention. Among them was how ubiquitous the world's problems were.
People were fighting in wars, killing each other for money and glory, dying from disease or struggling under poverty and miserable living conditions. Everywhere she went, people begged her for money, or food, or anything that could assist them. The whole world seemed riddled with one problem after another. Samantha wondered: why didn't Master Hand do anything about it?
It was around this point when Samantha became disillusioned towards religion. Many people worshiped Master Hand as their deity of choice; Samantha had a hard time believing that any deity which let such global atrocities continue was deserving of praise. She concluded that it was up to them, the humans and other citizens of This World, to clean up their own mess.
Innocence lost and opinions forever colored by what she had seen, Samantha embarked on a personal quest to alert others of the world's problems. Reading all those books had helped her learn quite a bit about the English language, so she was able to land a job at an advertising firm fairly quickly. From there she weaseled her way into a job at a news organization – the writing staff of the Smash City Star, the town's leading newspaper. At first she was a lowly intern, but her relentless determination and hard work earned her such praise that she was offered a position as a junior reporter. She accepted it graciously.
Rumors abounded that Sam was on the fast track not to a senior position at the newspaper, but to an anchor position on the Smash City Evening News, which was owned by the same company that owned the Smash City Star and shared many reporters with the newspaper. Samantha was one of those shared, and frequently did video reports for the Evening News, catching the attention of the upper management. She wasn't the prettiest face on the block, being rather plain, but she made up for it with unrivaled enthusiasm and a zest for the truth unheard of by the other reporters. She met with the head of the national news division, who offered her the chance to cover a massive story; the disappearance of Midair Stadium at the opening round of the latest Smash Bros. Tournament.
It was a perfect storm of coincidence that turned out in Samantha's favor. The Evening News' top reporter had actually been covering the Stadium event at the time and disappeared into Subspace along with the rest of the audience; the organization's other reporters were overseas at the time and would take too long to get back home. A replacement reporter was needed on short notice, so Samantha was suddenly given the chance she'd wanted all along; the opportunity to “wake the world up”, as she called it. She accepted.
Samantha's news organization was just one of many covering the event, but her channel was the one most people in Smash City saw. More odd occurrences were popping up around the continent in quick succession, and Samantha was the only reporter in her organization available for them; her face quickly became well-known on TV as the citizens of Smash City watched for new developments, terrified that the next Subspace hole might open in their backyard. By the time the overseas reporters made it back to the main continent, Samantha had become too recognized to be replaced; her bosses continued sending her out to cover every new development in what was being called the Subspace War.
After the war ended, Samantha was famous in Smash City. Her bizarre clothing style made her instantly recognizable and served its purpose well by gaining the undivided attention of anyone she was asked to interview. She began getting offers from headhunter after headhunter, each one more enticing than the last.
Samantha decided it was time to take the next step. She went freelance.
Suddenly anyone was able to hire her, and they did – on her terms, of course. During the two years that followed she covered everything from safety and health violations in Kremling Industries to the environmental impacts of Chain-Chomp breeding. She always aimed for the truth, and when she found it, she sought to disseminate it as much as possible so that everyone might benefit from it.
Most recently Samantha was hired to do a series on the personal lives of the Smashers – the infamous heroes that ended the Subspace War and battled periodically in the Smash Bros. Tournament. Her first subject was the one she was most curious about; the mysterious and reclusive Samus Aran, intergalactic bounty hunter.
Anything else? (Optional)
Samantha can be seen munching on Snicker-Snax whenever she's hard at work doing research on a lead; according to her research assistants, she goes through several bags a day when she's close to cracking a big story. Her favorite flavor is “Vorpal”.
