Lumas
Lumas are star-like creatures that appear in Super Mario Galaxy. Unlike most Stars, they have a tear drop-like shape, and come in many colors. They are much like Power Stars, but they are more circular in shape and able to talk. Lumas boast the ability to transform, from minor objects to entire galaxies.
Appearance:
The Comet Observatory is a form of spacecraft designed for galactic exploration. It is normally accessed through the Gateway Galaxy and is home to Rosalina and the Lumas. It is fuelled by Star Power which is gathered at a large beacon in the middle of the observatory. At full power, the observatory is able to travel across the universe.
There are six themed Domes scattered throughout the Observatory which fighters are able to move over to for a change of scenery. They are listed as follows: the Terrace, the Fountain, the Kitchen, the Bedroom, the Engine Room, and the Garden. According to the Lumas, the Domes are used to view the cosmos.
History:
One day, Rosalina discovered a rusty spaceship (resembling the Starshroom) with a Luma inside. The Luma introduced itself, revealing that it was waiting for its "Mama". Rosalina bonded with the Luma, and promised that she would wait with it. Armed with her father's telescope, Rosalina stargazed for years, searching for the comet that carried the Luma's mother. Fearing it was taking too long, Rosalina and Luma fixed the spaceship then set off into space.
As the search continued, Rosalina comforted the Luma, and told the little star she would take care of it, and with that a spark in her heart went off. She became determined to mother the Luma and then started to make the home out of the comet. With tools found inside the comet, Rosalina built what would become Domes that would link to various galaxies. For now, however, it was a shelter for Lumas. Once completed it seemed very large for her and just one Luma.
One day another comet flew close to Rosalina's new home, and from the comet another Luma appeared. The Luma affectionately called out and said Rosalina was it's "Mama." Soon the other Luma joined in: "My Mama, My Mama!" Rosalina found this so touching she couldn't help but laugh. Out of the comet many more Lumas came, and all of them called her Mama. She took them all under her wing, named them, and moved them all into her newly built house on the comet.
It was at this time the Lumas she met inside the ship had an idea. The Lumas transformed the comet into the Comet Observatory to help in finding all their Mamas. The Lumas explained that when they grow up, they transform into various things, including stars, comets, and planets. Rosalina was so overcome with emotion due to this selfless act she thanked all the Lumas that had huddled around to hug her. From that day on Rosalina never cried again. The observatory grew and grew into a better home, and Rosalina and the Luma were proud to call it their own.
When Rosalina encountered Mario, she relayed to him how one day, a mysterious force held the Comet Observatory in place and drained it of its Star Power and Star Bits. This placed the Observatory into a state of hibernation, rendered immobile with only enough Star Power remaining to keep a single Dome functional: the Terrace. Rosalina offered Mario a deal, offering to take him to where Bowser had taken Princess Peach - at the center of the universe - if he could, first, retrieve Grand Stars to fuel the Observatory's beacon once more so that it could resume its functions as a starship able to travel through space. Mario agreed, and was successfully transported to Galaxies detected as having Star Power energy readings by the Observatory's systems.
Over time, Mario was able to gradually bring the Observatory back to full power by retrieving Grand Stars from across the galaxies. When this occurred, Rosalina channelled the star power into a massive gravity field surrounding the Observatory and transported it forward in its comet form towards the centre of the universe, where Bowser's Galaxy Reactor awaited. Smashing through the Reactor's defensive fleets, Rosalina used magic to extend a bridge out so that Mario could get aboard to fulfil the rest of his quest.
With the Observatory back at full power, it continued its endless journey across the Cosmos.
Events:
SPACE PIRATES ATTACK!
The Comet Observatory is currently powerless and running in its hibernation state having suffered from Space Pirate and Subspace Army attacks from which it hasn't really recovered. The central beacon is emitting a distress signal in an attempt to gain attention from passing starships in an attempt to receive aid. In the meantime, it is likely that Space Pirates might make another attempt at raiding the Observatory so fighters might have to defend the Lumas from invading forces.
PRANKSTER COMET IN ORBIT!
Occasionally, a Prankster Comet might show up in orbit of the Observatory. When this occurs, the Prankster Comet's influence interferes with the location in a certain fashion. Prankster Comets reward fighters with a Power Star which gives them temporary invulnerability, if they please the Comet by playing along with its mischief:
Gravity is somewhat lessened here, so jump height is increased and fall time is decreased.

Prankster Comets reward fighters with a Power Star which gives them temporary invulnerability, if they please the Comet by playing along with its mischief:
- Speedy Comet
The Speedy Comet places a timer on the fight, which begins to count down. A certain part of the stage will be highlighted in red, signalling that fighters have to interact with this location before the timer runs out. The first fighter to do this in time will be rewarded with a Power Star. - Daredevil Comet
Everyone's HP is reduced to 1 by the Daredevil Comet, leaving them vulnerable to the slightest injury for the rest of the Comet's orbit. Players who survive the Comet's orbit will be rewarded with a Power Star. - Cosmic Comet
The Cosmic Comet creates a starry clone of each fighter, and they join in the fight for the rest of the Comet's orbit. The Cosmic clones are able to use their copied fighter's moves, and they drop a shower of Star Bits every time they are damaged which heal 1 HP for each piece when eaten. Fighters who manage to defeat their own clones are rewarded with a Power Star. - Fast Foe Comet
Everyone receives a speed boost for the rest of the Comet's orbit, including Space Pirates should they attack. Fighters who manage to survive a speed boosted Space Pirate attack might be rewarded with a Power Star. - Purple Comet
The stage is showered with Purple Coins for the rest of the Comet's orbit. The fighter with the most Purple Coins once they are all collected receives a Power Star as a reward.
Gravity is somewhat lessened here, so jump height is increased and fall time is decreased.
