Name of Location:
Ventosus Plains (known as "The Plain" during the Subspace Emissary)
Neighboring Locations:
Serenus Forest, Midair Stadium, Serenus Lake, Smash City, the BattleField Fortress, the Wilds
Bestiary:
SUBSPACE:
-Borboras; these wind-spewing enemies from the former Subspace Army feel right at home in Ventosus' gales. They are many, having congregated here after the war ended, and pose the greatest threat to travelers.
-Primid, Boom Primid, Fire Primid; though they prefer the security of Serenus Forest and the northeast jungles, these enemies will sometimes make appearances on the Plains as they travel to and from other areas.
-Feyesh; floating eyeballs are quite aerodynamic, it turns out, and these enemies have no problems flying when the winds get rough. They like to dive down from their lofty cruising altitudes and prey on the rodents, rabbits, and other small creatures that make their home in the plains.
-Ticken; few of these chickens remain, most having been stripped of their armor at the end of the Subspace War. However, one or two might still be lurking about.
-Jyk; these indestructible fireballs refused to be removed from their resting places after the war was over. They still hide in the caverns underneath the plains, ready to pose a scorching obstacle to unwitting travelers.
-Spaak; these cloudy enemies retreated high into the atmosphere at the end of the Subspace War. They periodically descend down to the inner atmosphere in search of moisture, which they use to sustain their existence.
-Glunder; these electrified spheres moved too fast to be caught and destroyed by Smash citizens after the end of the war. They can be found rolling between the hills during the spring and summer.
OTHER ANIMALS:
-Rabbits
-Field mice
-Eagles
-Wolves
Appearance:
The Ventosus Plains act as a buffer zone between Serenus Forest, Smash City, the Battlefield Fortress, and the Wilds. They extend diagonally from the far northwest (next to the Midair Stadium) to the beginning of the Wilds near the southern edge of the continent.
In terms of appearance, Ventosus is all hills, grass, and sparse trees. Rivers occasionally break it up and add some variety, but other than that, there is not much to see.
Ventosus is characterised by one important aspect; its' winds. The low-pressure systems that develop over Serenus Lake and the ocean to the northwest naturally draw in air from the high-pressure Wilds to the east, and this air gets pulled over the Ventosus Plains, creating near-constant gales.
Every spring, Ventosus becomes host to massive floods as consistent rainfall makes the rivers winding through it overflow their banks. This actually is a good thing, as Ventosus' natural flooding keeps the excess water away from nearby Smash City and the Serenus Forest, allowing it to channel the water northwards toward the ocean. Unfortunately, the flooding tends to wash away even more nutrients from the soil...
History
Ventosus is a flood plain, the result of ancient glacial movements that carved a wide swath as the mountains of ice moved southeast towards the shoreline of the continent. Erosion soon turned these glacial trenches into soft sloping hills, and the wild jungles that sprung up to the northeast quickly overtook the area. Hundreds of years of soil leeching soon followed as plants grew and died in the region, their roots draining the dirt of all nutrients and turning it into sod. Eventually the rainforest was scaled back after the soil became too weak to sustain it, and the only plants capable of surviving on the plains now are prairie grass and a few deciduous trees. A few hopefuls from Smash City have tried farming on the plains before, but their efforts always met with failure -- mostly due to poor soil and constant floods.
Events:
During Spring and Summer, Ventosus' stage hazard becomes floodwater; rushing currents tend to drag combatants off the battlefield and force others onto the tips of the highest hills, where the water cannot reach. During Autumn and Winter, Ventosus' stage hazard is Wind; the winds are fierce and can shove Smashers in several directions, messing up their attacks and leaving them vulnerable to counters.
Anything Else:
Ventosus has a large reservoir of ground water available in caverns beneath its sod and soil, and it is occasionally used by Smash City as a freshwater source.
Ventosus, along with the Wilds, was once the home of the R.O.B. clan. The robots later moved to the Island of the Ancients and left their ruins behind to crumble under the floods and winds of the plain.
