Name of Location:
Lynari Desert
Game of Origin:
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
Nintendo Appearance:
GameCube
Neighboring Locations:
Leuda (a village of nomadic thieves) and nothing else: Lynari is a desert island way out in the ocean.
Bestiary:
This location is from a Final Fantasy game so naturally it has its own encyclopedia of beasties. Here's some of them.
Scorpion
One of the most common enemies of the desert, these arachnids boast two venomous stingers with which they can stab, poison, and paralyze their prey. When not hunting on the surface of the desert, they burrow underground to sleep.
Zu
These sightless avians have more in common with pterodactyls than modern birds. They nest in the rocky outcrops along the edge of the island and usually dine on fish, but have been known to move inland in search of food if the ocean doesn't provide them enough of it. They have no eyes, and track their prey through exceptionally good hearing.
Chimera
The name is actually a misnomer; these beasts are a quirk of evolution, not some mad scientist's fusion experiment. They possess long tentacle-like appendages which they use to attack enemies and two large horns they can use for a ramming attack. They dwell in the rockier western portions of the island, away from the majority of the desert's sand.
Antlion
These big baddies are rare and hardly ever show their faces above the surface of the desert. Usually they remain below the surface at the center of shallow sand pits and grab prey who fall in with their exceptionally long mandibles, dragging them under the sand to be eaten. If provoked, a male Antlion may reveal their whole body in order to attack their transgressor and protect their home.
Appearance:
Lynari is bare and sandy, with a thick layer of volcanic deposits resting underneath the sandstone. Rare minerals can be found in these deposits, making Lynari a valuable find for weapon and armor smiths. It was once home to massive sandworms that have since been hunted to extinction due to the importance of their saliva as an ingredient in powerful medicines: now all that remains of them are husks and broken cartilage that stick up out of the desert like massive bones.
History:
The island of Lynari is the result of seismic events stemming from a neighboring volcanic island called Kilanda; the volcano's eruptions caused massive earthquakes that pushed up a shelf of sandstone from the ocean floor until it breached the surface of the water and formed an island. Many monsters from Kilanda migrated to the Lynari Desert and adapted to its harsh climate. It remained undisturbed for thousands of years until, eventually...the Selkies arrived.
The Selkies are a race of nomadic thieves; they once lived a good life on Crystal Chronicles' main continent in a large city at Marr's Pass, which was located at a crossroads between the main cities of the area.
To the north lay the kingdom of the Lilties, a proud race of warriors bent on conquering the whole of the continent. Marr's pass lay next to valuable ore mines, and the Selkies used this to their advantage to charge premiums for the materials the Lilties needed to make armor and weapons. The Lilties didn't appreciate this much and performed a hostile takeover, kicking the Selkies out of their home and sending them fleeing to the uninhabited lands in the west.
The Selkies tried to build a new home amidst the swampy marshes of Conall Curach, but soon discovered the land was uninhabitable. As a last desperate move, they built ships to carry their race across the ocean and found the Lynari Desert many miles offshore. The discovery of even more valuable materials within the desert signaled the beginning of a prosperous trade route between the island and the mainland; the Selkies have since made a nice little home for themselves amongst the rock and sand, creating the village of Leuda.
Events:
Lynari is host to all manner of sandstorms, which can pop up quite suddenly and at random; they can range from mildly annoying to sear-the-flesh-from-your-bones chaotic. Generally they'll just obscure the battlefield from view and deal small amounts of damage to all combatants.
Anything Else:
Lynari is scorching hot during the daytime. Anybody wearing heavy amounts of clothing or a particularly thick coat of fur is prone to heatstroke while traveling the desert with the sun up. At night the temperature plunges to freezing depths, the polar opposite of the daytime; campfires are a requirement for surviving the night here.
Also, sand gets inside of everything. No exceptions.
